Final played on Tuesday 20 June. Congratulations Jane Byrnes (s) and Lesley Hines on their win, 22:17 against Jan Morris and Lyn Beaumont. Sounds like a good game. Could have been a five shot turn around on the last end if Jan had been a millimeter to the left! No wonder we play the game – there is always a knife edge moment to keep us coming back.
Wal Hind Day
Which is the most coveted trophy – The Wal Hind or The Mixed Pairs? I reckon there would be a fifty-fifty split on opinion for that one! The Wal Hind was fought out today, Monday of the Queens Birthday long weekend and there was such competition!
The rink on the top green even had a parallel scoreboard for the lower green to see – to put them off track and keep the real score secret. I don’t think I have ever seen so many sidelong glances at scoreboards!
The game counts all bowls inside a yard stick, wielded skillfully by the leads hoping to get as many bowls as possible in the count.
The top score – the winners – Bonny Lam and John Vanderlight had 124 so you can see what I mean!
I know we were all out to win but it is always such a social day. We had a great crowd. Some turned up early to see a heat of the Ladies Pairs in the morning so made a day of it.
If you missed out don’t worry, plenty more opportunities for a game of bowls at Beecroft. Come on down or make contact with one of us.
Womens Bowls – Northern Suburbs District Singles. 29 May.
Lesley Hines was off and running, pulling well ahead early in the game. The large contingent of Beecroft supporters was cheering her all the way but in the end Cath Foster triumphed to take the title. Well done Cath. Commiserations Lesley – you did us proud.
The semi-final of the District Singles was played at North Epping today. Judy Thorp and Lesley Hines were carrying the flag for Beecroft against Cath Foster and Rowena Coode from Pennant Hills, with mixed results.
Judy lost out to Cath Foster in a very tight game 25-19 and Lesley won over Rowena 25-16 in a good win.
The final is being played at West Pennant Hills on 2 June 2017. Go Lesley!
State Fours Carnival – Women’s Bowls
Our girls had fun at the 2017 State Carnival, which wrapped up on Friday 26 May at Warilla Bowling Club. Too much bowls is never enough and, as always, these events are a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and catch up with old.
We had two teams in the mix and at least some of the girls took the opportunity to take a scenic drive (get lost). They wound their way south along the picturesque Lawrence Hargraves drive, around the cliffs and then via the National Park. At least their olden days bowls-mobile holds lots of petrol, even if it doesn’t have sat-nav!
Bias can report that there were some mixed results, coming unstuck against Valentine, for example, with a score of 22-12 and some close losses against Sylvania and Port Macquarie. The score lines also had some impressive wins, including a win against Goulburn Railway 26-13 and against Fig Tree 26-13.
The girls were pleased to meet the new state president, Maryann Parcell, who came around and introduced herself – a bright and cheery person by reports.
Playing bowls several days running is a pretty good effort, particularly when Wednesday was so windy they thought they would be blown away. A few times it was all they could do to stand still to bowl.
Thanks to the reporter on the spot, Lyn Thornewell and pictures from Merryl and Lesley. A few more photos in the gallery (soon).
5 May. Womens Bowls – Northern Suburbs District Triples. Good on you Beecroft for putting three teams in the competition. Unfortunately two were drawn against each other in the first round and they couldn’t both win!
Congratulations Judy’s team: Kathleen McNaught, Rhonda Willmore, Judy Thorp 17:12 Lyn Thornewell, Jill Hartshorn, Merryl Gray. The third team (Barbara Robertson, Lesley Hines and Jan Morris ) had a bye but we will be looking out for them in the next round.
Women’s Pennants 2017
- Grade 2: Beecroft was in it almost to the end but the eventual winner for the grade was North Epping. Congratulations girls.
- Grade 3: Beecroft came 2nd – well done. The winner for the grade was West Pennant Hills.
Gala day – 1 May 2017
The Women’s club gala day was a great success. The green was full and it was clear that games were fun and competitive. It was great to have Brian Allman, representing one of platinum sponsors, Beecroft Pharmacy, present the prizes. Thanks to Beecroft Pharmacy for their generosity in sponsoring the day.
The winners on the day were a composite team from Western Suburbs and Toongabbie.
Men’s major singles final
Two great bowlers, so many tight heads but in the end Bob Wallen claimed the championship. Congratulations Bob. Wal Saville put in a great effort – disappointing to come so close but we know he will be back next year. The spectators had a competitive game to watch, and yet another great way to spend a Sunday morning.
Bob Wallen 31:20 Wal Saville. 30 April 2017
The fashion parade was a great success. A lovely morning tea was enjoyed while the models showed off the outfits. This year the selection of fashions was right on the mark.
So keep your eye out for all the ladies who snapped up some stylish pieces for their wardrobes
Men’s major singles semi-final
A couple of great games. Bob Wallen beat Stephen Bruce by just one point and in another close game Wal Saville took out the game against Craig Davis by 31:25. It drew quite a couple of dozen spectators for a very pleasant Sunday morning.
As usual a great night with quite a crowd turning up to end the week in good company.
Turn Around Triples
Always a great event at The Beecroft Club. Nevertheless, with the crazy weather lately we were lucky to get through the day with only a few spots of rain.
Thanks to Living Choice for their sponsorship of the day.
Following some pretty tight competition the winners finally came through.
